Having an overripe banana in my fruit basket, I was deciding between peanut butter banana smoothie or coffee banana.
But ended up making a totally different combination smoothie.
Used a blood orange in this smoothie along with other citrus fruits. Overripe banana is so sweet that the sweetness is dominant and citrus fruits tend to neutralize or complement that sweetness.
Nutritional stats between blood oranges and regular ones are almost the same, except that blood orange has fewer calories than regular navel oranges. Blood orange has an aroma that's raspberry like, and the purplish orange color is due to an antioxidant called anthocyanins.
This will make a perfect breakfast smoothie too(especially if your day is in the sun),since banana is a superfood with good sugar, potassium and other minerals and the citrus fruits provide needed nourishment and antioxidants to begin the day with. Green apple is a good detox ingredient. Make sure to add protein to the smoothie to make it a complete meal. Fruits by themselves without protein accompaniment are treated as nothing but sugar by the digestive system undermining the purpose of the smoothie.
I use coconut milk or manna (coconut meat) or almond milk as my protein source in the smoothie.
1 medium banana ( frozen tastes better)
1 cup pineapple chunks
1/2 cup green apple chops
1 medium blood orange peeled, deseeded
1 navel orange peeled and deseeded
1/4 cup organic almond milk
1/2 cup cold water
Pomegranate arils or blueberries for garnish
Blend all the ingredients to a smoothie. Add ice cubes if needed.
If you don't have blood orange, raspberries 1/4 cup or just regular orange will do.
